Burlington Airport Public Art Concepts
Burlington, VT

I was honored to be selected as a finalist with nine other artists to develop proposals for three public art opportunities at the Burlington Airport. It was a wonderful opportunity to combine my love of nature photography and pattern as a way to celebrate Vermont!

As an experiential designer, I wanted to approach the project holistically and developed proposals for all three artwork areas instead of selecting one. While each space had its own purpose, I used pattern design as a connective thread to make them feel cohesive.

I created artwork that incorporated my own Vermont macro nature photography, using the photographs to create installation concepts with intricate, organic patterns that were printed on maple wood panels and painted on the walls. Each space had its own inspiration: a long Vermont barn quilt, whimsical gardens for a children's space, and larger than life plant silhouettes to highlight the tall ceilings and fireplace. In addition to wall installations, I was also able to budget for concrete floor patterns that connected each of the spaces and helped with wayfinding and framing the waiting areas.

While I was disappointed that my proposal was not chosen to move forward, the process of developing it was really rewarding and something I want to share with others. I enjoyed every aspect of working on these concepts, from photography to budgeting, and it was incredibly exciting to be selected with such a talented group of artists.

A huge thank you to Kyle Wolfe for being a great resource and providing guidance on pricing, materials, and installation. Thanks also to Kevin Cherashore of MS Sign and Mark Laning for sharing installation and pricing information and being super responsive.
